Desde 2003, se han publicado numerosos casos del s\u00edndrome. La lepra ha sido implicada como un ejemplo de s\u00edndrome de reconstituci\u00f3n inmunol\u00f3gica de all\u00ed la importancia que \u00e9ste se reconozca en \u00e1reas en donde la lepra es end\u00e9mica.
